While it is often linked to older age, the prevalence of hypertension among adolescents has been on the rise. Hypertension in adolescents is particularly concerning because it can persist into adulthood, increasing the risk of morbidity and mortality. Although clinical prevalence among children and adolescents is lower than in adults, research suggests that essential hypertension in adults often begins during adolescence. Therefore, it is essential to empower the community to manage its risk factors effectively.
Objective: This program aims to enhance public knowledge, particularly among adolescents, on how to control the risk factors for hypertension. The goal is to equip adolescents with accurate knowledge of hypertension risk factors.
Methods: The methods employed in this program include health education through counseling sessions and blood pressure measurements conducted among adolescents, specifically students from SMA Katolik Karitas Tomohon and SMP Katolik Gonzaga Tomohon.
Results: Statistical analysis using the T-test revealed a significant difference in students' knowledge before and after the counseling sessions, with a p-value of 0.000. This indicates a significant increase in adolescents' knowledge about hypertension after receiving counseling. Early detection through blood pressure measurements showed an increase in blood pressure among some adolescents. The majority of students, 56 (71.8%), had normal blood pressure, while 12 students (15.4%) exhibited elevated blood pressure. Furthermore, 6 students (7.7%) were classified as having stage 1 hypertension, and 4 students (5.1%) were found to have stage 2 hypertension.
Nancy S H Malonda, Paul A T Kawatu, Yulianty Sanggelorang Copyright (c) 2025 Pusat Penelitian dan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat, POLITEKNIK NEGERI NUSA UTARA https://e-journal1.polnustar.ac.id/tkrg/article/view/677 Sat, 01 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0000 An Implementation of Marine Ecosystem Education for Early Childhood to Support Sangihe Marine Tourism https://e-journal1.polnustar.ac.id/tkrg/article/view/720
Coral reefs in the Sangihe Islands face vulnerability due to coastal pressures and environmental changes, highlighting the need for educational efforts that foster conservation awareness from an early age. Early childhood is a crucial period for internalizing ecological values, making educational institutions strategic settings to introduce marine ecosystem concepts through structured learning. This community service aimed to integrate marine ecosystem materials into early childhood education and encourage the participation of children and parents in simple conservation practices. The program was implemented in preparation, execution, and evaluation stages involving children, teachers, and parents. Activities included developing educational media, delivering interactive materials, and conducting simulated coral transplantation as a contextual learning tool. Evaluation involved collecting feedback to inform the final report. Results showed that children improved their understanding of marine ecosystem structures and the ecological role of coral reefs. Learners engaged actively with visual media and simulation activities. Parents participated in supporting the learning process, while teachers acquired relevant resources suited to the island context. The learning environment was enriched through simple exploratory activities that reinforced experiential learning. The program also expanded family awareness of coastal resource management and promoted children’s ecological literacy.
Getruida Nita Mozes, Riyanti, Mukti Trenggono, Rizqi Rizaldi Hidayat, Walter Balansa, Frets J.
